Just okay--not much attention to detail

Having stayed at several Fairmont Hotels in Canada, this one is just "okay," which is probably not the kind of feeling you want to have when you are spending $500+ a night. We paid for a family suite, and there's just a lack of attention to detail at this hotel and curious design decisions in the rooms that just end up being frustrating. PROS: (1) Free parking outside that is reasonably close, if you can find it (2) Lovely location with large hotel grounds (3) Pool area is excellent (4) Some staff members really go above and beyond (especially Nivil in the pool area) (5) It was nice that they had a small indoor play area for small children (6) Bed was comfy CONS: (1) Lots of things are sort of broken, at least in our room. The Chromecast didn't work (and I'm tech savvy, it was not user error), one set of manual blinds didn't work, the button for the mechanical blinds randomly fell off the wall, the heater was never able to get the room above 22 degrees C in the main room (we went in winter), the desk lamp was broken and wouldn't say upright, the faucets handles need to be moved in millimeters otherwise the water goes from too cold to scalding hot. (2) If you don't speak French, you will to a certain extent be treated as a second-class citizen, at least by some of the staff. I speak half-way decent French, but still got the vibe. Some staff do not speak English at all (I know it's Quebec and they speak French there, but if you are at a deluxe hotel, you would expect at least some staff to speak even broken English). (3) Everything in the room just kind of feels old. Part of that is to maintain the historic vibe, but at some point you need to replace things that just plain don't work (like the desk lamp that kept falling on my laptop). (4) Food is mediocre--the best meal I had was from the fast food St. Hubert at the Casino. Our server for dinner at Le Saint Laurent was not very good--we spent 20 minutes just waiting for our dessert and check. If you aren't drinking wine, they put you on the back burner. (5) I can only speak for the winter, but the clientele here is quite old--I would say the average age was 55-60. Not too many families stay here. (6) Strange design choices, at least in our room. Mechanical shades that took forever to open and close (it would have been better if they had just been manual), very poor interior lighting (just a couple lamps, no overhead lighting), light switches that turn on the hallway + the closet, so if someone had to find something in the closet at night, it would light up the whole room. (7) Nothing remarkable about the rooms, period. They definitely do not scream luxury. Rather characterless, some cheap finishes (especially in the bathroom). Definitely not a room you are going to remember. Overall the stay was fine, but probably not worth what we paid. If I were staying in Charlevoix in the future, I might consider a B&B for something a little more memorable.

Our group of 3 couples enjoyed dinner, drinks, and tobogganing during Quebec Winter Festival at The Frontenac. The Hotel was full so we stayed at the Auberge Tresor across the street. The setting in the bar located in the common areas of the hotel was perfect with comfy chairs and a fire. Service was excellent.

Our family has visited several times now and we love this hotel! The pool area is amazing and restaurants are good! Our kids love the mascot, Perle. We often visit at Easter and there are special activities for the kids! Highly recommend for a family

First of all I understand that it may be hard to staff as your location is quite remote; Front desk staff 10/10, Valet service 10/10, restaurant staff 5/10. The Hostess in dining room - 0/10, I know when we went for dinner we had not had time to dress for dinner and we had casual clothes on but when she had the gall to ask if we were staying at the hotel before she gave us a table; seemed put out that we wanted a table immediately, since we had just driven 6 hours to get there I think she could use a sentence like "you must be tired from the drive let get you a table" instead we got " you want a table now? do you have a reservation? are you staying in the hotel?" By the way there were only 2 tables busy in the restaurant at the time. The first waiter made it clear that he didn't want to serve us and never came back; the next 2 servers were good. We had a suite room (222) and it was nice, only concern was the shower as the tub was very narrow and hard to turn around in. I understand it is an old hotel and removing these tubs would not be an option. Our convention went well and the staff during this event were excellent.
